SALIHIN Shariah Advisory is a registered Shariah Adviser with the Securities Commission Malaysia (SC). This registration enables SALIHIN Shariah Advisory to advice on all Shariah-based products and services regulated by the SC and to be appointed as a Shariah adviser. SALIHIN Shariah Advisory is a group member firm of SALIHIN. SALIHIN is the brand under which independent member firms of SALIHIN International LLP (SALIHIN International) operate and provide professional services. Leveraging on its experienced international and local Shariah advisers as well as drawing on the global knowledge and resources of SALIHIN member firms, SALIHIN Shariah Advisory provides advisory and consultancy in various industry including: Islamic capital market, banking, takaful, asset management, wealth management, fintech, zakat and waqf, shariah audit, review, screening and product development among others.
Roles and Responsibilities of SALIHIN Shariah Advisory as the Shariah Adviser
- Providing Shariah expertise and guidance on the Fund’s deed, prospectus, product structures, documentation, operations, investment process, and other operational and administrative matters.
- Reviewing and approving Shariah compliance of investment strategies, transactions, and Fund’s activities.
- Conducting periodic Shariah reviews and Shariah audits on the Fund’s activities.
- Preparing a Shariah report to be included in the Fund’s semi-annual and annual reports certifying whether the Fund has been managed and administered in accordance with Shariah principles for the period concerned.
- Scrutinizing the Fund’s compliance report as provided by the compliance officer, and investment transaction reports provided by, or duly approved by, the Trustee to ensure that the Fund’s investments are in line with Shariah principles.
- Issuing Shariah opinions, reports, and endorsements on the Fund for regulatory submissions.
- Ensuring continuous adherence of the Fund to Shariah principles and requirements set by the Securities Commission of Malaysia (SC) and relevant regulatory standards.
- Consulting with Shariah Committee where there is any ambiguity or uncertainty as to an investment, instrument, system, procedure and/or process.
- Acting with due care, skill and diligence in carrying out its duties and responsibilities.

SALIHIN’s Shariah team consists of the following personnel:
Dr. Ahcene Lahsasna is the Chief Executive Officer and a registered Shariah Adviser with the Securities Commission Malaysia. He holds a PhD in Islamic Law & Islamic Jurisprudence from IIUM and a PhD in Economics & Business from University of Malaya. He is also a Registered Shariah Adviser with Bank Negara Malaysia. Dr. Ahcene has extensive experience advising Islamic capital markets, Takaful, Re-Takaful, Islamic banking, and other Islamic business entities both locally and internationally. He currently serves as Chairman of the Shariah Committee at Standard Chartered Saadiq Bank Malaysia since 2019. Previously, he was a member of the Shariah Committee at Maybank Islamic Berhad and Chairman of Etiqa Insurance & Takaful (2009–2019). He is a Fellow of the Malaysia Financial Planning Council (MFPC) and a Shariah Registered Financial Planner (SRFP). Dr. Ahcene has authored more than 30 books in English and Arabic on Islamic Finance and Shariah, including Shariah Audit in Islamic Finance.
Zarina Md Desa is the Head of Shariah Advisory of SALIHIN Shariah Advisory since 2018. Prior to joining SALIHIN Shariah Advisory, she worked in the Malaysian financial industry in various capacities and work areas namely risk management, credit bureau services, project management, committee secretariat, marketing, credit processing, call centre operations, customer service, complaint management, recruitment, learning development, performance management and statutory reporting. Her involvement in the Islamic Finance area started in the Kingdom of Bahrain where she lectured on the subject matter at several higher learning institutions. Currently, her main area of responsibilities at SSA includes managing all aspects of Shariah advisory engagements for local and foreign clients. She holds a Bachelor Degree in Finance & Management from University of Oregon USA, MBA from University Utara Malaysia and Chartered Islamic Finance Professional (CIFP) from INCEIF. Zarina is also a Chartered Member of Chartered Institute of Islamic Finance Professionals (CIIF) and Certified Islamic Banker (CIB), accredited by CIBAFI.
